Jalan Alor is one of the most popular food trip destinations in Kuala Lumpur for locals and foreigners alike.
On our first night, we have decided to discover the food haven immediately. We did not search on the internet where and what we should eat, instead, we just head-on and see for ourselves what would capture our attention.
Walking on the busy streets, seeing different food stalls offering different types of food, it was a bit hard to decide as everything looks delicious.
It’s as if all the food items are calling us.
We did not order crabs and octopus since we are too lazy to have and eat it even though it looks really tempting and delicious. Also, we chose to eat in just one restaurant and skipped trying out the dim sum and other street food since we already ate at Nando’s before going here which is, by the way, a bad move. But we only have a limited time here so, we might as well indulge in all the food we can.
We decided to eat in one of the brightest and biggest restaurants in the area which is the Xi Jin Kitchen.
We ordered fried rice, fried kway teow, lamb satay, salted egg sotong, cereal prawns, sweet and sour fish, and some drinks. It was actually a bit hard to choose on their humongous menu since we want everything!
Fried Rice – the rice was good but the jalapeno on the side made it even better. It was my first time trying it out with rice and it was surprisingly good!
Price: RM 13
Table for: 1-2 persons
Food Rating: 4/5
Penang Fried Kway Teow – stir-fried flat rice noodles with shrimp, eggs, and bean sprouts.
It was our first time trying this dish and its appearance was not that appetizing for us since it has a darker color compared to what we saw in the photos. Also, the noodles were a bit overcooked and we did not like its overall taste that much.
Price: RM 12
Table for: 2 persons
Food Rating: 3/5
Lamb Satay – another popular dish in South East Asian countries. We liked its overall taste as it was savory and not gamey however the meat was still a bit tough. It actually tastes good alone thus there’s no need for the peanut sauce.
Price: RM 1.50
Table for: 1 pc
Food Rating: 3.5/5
Salted Egg Sotong – crispy squid with salted egg. We highly recommend that you order this dish if you love squid and salted eggs!
It’s good to have with rice or just eat it as is or maybe pair it with a glass of beer.
Price: RM 30.90
Table for: 1
Food Rating: 5/5
Cereal Prawns – love this one too! The cereals added texture and flavor to the already delicious prawns.
Price: RM 30.90
Table for: 2-3 persons
Food Rating: 5/5
Sweet and Sour Sliced Fish – I love sweet & sour dishes and this one was not an exemption.
If you want to be safe on your food choices, you should order this.
Price: RM 30.90
Table for: 3-4 persons
Food Rating: 4/5
Fragrant Coconut – I super love drinking fresh coconut water and I was wondering if it tastes the same here. Haha. It actually does. Very refreshing indeed. I finished even the coconut meat inside.
Price: RM 13.80
Table for: 1
Drink Rating: 5/5
Grass Jelly – just a typical gulaman drink that you might want to pair with your food.
Price: RM 3.90
Table for: 1
Drink Rating: 3.5/5
On the side note, we’re a bit shocked that their ice costs RM 2.90. We all thought it was free. Haha.
Overall, we love the night market vibe here. Definitely one of the places that you should visit if you are looking for a gastronomic experience in Kuala Lumpur. There were a lot of people but somehow the place does not look chaotic. There were also live performances on the different parts of the street and were lucky enough to be serenaded by one of the best street performers giving us a really chill vibe.
Ambiance: 5/5
Service: 4/5
Value for Money: 5/5
Overall Rating: 5/5
The restaurant also serves desserts but we are looking for the ice cream served in a coconut shell that we saw a few people eating while walking on the street. So, we have decided to stroll the area again and find the ice cream.
Glad that we saw this!
The Coconut Ice Cream comes with 3 scoops of ice cream and coconut meat. It really tastes good and refreshing. Add into that that you can choose any of the toppings you want — unlimited.
The toppings include raisins, oreo cookie crumbs, dried mix fruits, cereals, corn flakes, coloured rice (candy sprinkles), sweet shredded coconut, peanut, sweet corn, desiccated coconut and koko krunch.
Price: RM 12
Table for: 3 scoops
Food Rating: 5/5
Definitely, one of the desserts that you should not miss! Also, they are offering free coconut water! Super sulit!
Overall, if you wanted to enjoy delicious yet affordable food, this place is definitely a must-try. Add into that you can enjoy eating and chillin’ in the area as they also serve alcoholic beverages here.
